The Formal Gamer is a Dungeons and Dragons podcast from 3 old friends in merry ol’ England. We play 4th Editions Dungeons and Dragons, we laugh at each other, we laugh at our characters misfortune, and we roll dice.
Our podcast is heavy into story and role-play, but with a definite sense of fun. It’s all set in our own world (yeah we created our own world, we’re a pretty cool) called Helan Skaa. We like adventures with a touch of intrigue, a dose of danger, and always with a big spoonful of chaos. We don’t like to get bogged down in discussions on rules, which class is best. This is an adventure, so strap in and enjoy the ride.
The Formal Gamer Guys, looking magnificent as standard.
Hi Lads Lads Lads,
I’ve been powering through series 1-6 over the last month or so and hope to be fully caught up by the end of November.
Having listened to a number of (American) D&D podcasts in the last year, it’s great to hear a few British accents and references to places I’ve actually heard of, so keep the roll play flowing as you’re all great!
As a side note, I’m interested in starting to play “live” again as a 43 year old man after having a 25 year break from playing AD&D (as it was back then), but am struggling to find a group to play with in the Guildford / Surrey area.
You guys got any suggestions for how to find private groups or link in with “home games” in this area by any chance???
Thanks
Matt

Cheers man. Glad you’re enjoying the show. You have gone through them quick.
As for finding a group if there’s a decent RPG shop then maybe check there. We grew up near Guildford (big up to Betchworth) and I can’t remember one.
Otherwise I normally look on Ukroleplayers or meetup.
Hope that helps.

Did a quick investigation.
I found…
These guys down just down the A25 in Dorking…https://www.meetup.com/DorkingDnD/and
and these guys actually in Guildford.

Though they might be more War Gamey. But the War Game crowd often overlaps with the RPG guys.
Hope that helps mate. Let us know if you find a group.

I stumbled across your podcast just before Christmas and have just started season 4. I am loving every minute of it and as the previous post mentioned, it’s refreshing to hear UK voices as I can find some the US accents a little jarring, and the humour not quite the same.
Do you have any recommendations for other DnD themed podcasts like yours? Obviously yours will be top of my list and I still have a way to go to catch up but I will do eventually and you can only churn out the material so fast.
Thanks for adding some humour to my morning commute, and keep up the good work!
Thanks
Steven
PS: Personal highlight so far is the start of season 3 when you surprised the DM with the relationship of your characters. I laughed very hard at that!

Cheers Steven.
There are a few to recommend. Firstly Wizards on the Wynd is a more tweaked and bespoke version of DnD and it is beautiful. It’s British and in it’s own world of high fantasy. Worth a listen I think.
Then for very rowdy DnD there is Dem Drunk Blokes. Proper over the top lads doing DnD with no boundaries.
Then there are shows like Crudely Drawn Swords which are probably more along our lines.
Hope that helps. Also it is often easier to catch us on Twitter or Facebook as the WordPress comment feature can be very temperamental. Just in case I ever miss a message.
Formal Danny
PS.
I love Season 3
